Differences Training Programs

Differences training addresses the specific variations and modifications within an aircraft type family, ensuring pilots maintain proficiency across multiple variants of the same basic aircraft model. This specialized training becomes necessary when airlines operate different configurations, avionics packages, or engine variants of the same aircraft type, such as transitioning from a Boeing 737-800 to a 737 MAX or between Airbus A320 family variants.

Target Audience and Requirements

Airline pilots, corporate flight crews, and commercial operators require differences training when their airlines introduce new aircraft variants or when pilots transition between companies operating different configurations of familiar aircraft types. The FAA mandates this training under Part 121.418 and Part 135.293, while EASA requires compliance with ORO.FC.220 for commercial operations.

Training Components and Simulator Integration

The program combines focused ground school covering system differences, revised procedures, and variant-specific limitations with intensive full flight simulator sessions. Level D flight simulators replicate the exact cockpit configuration, avionics systems, and flight characteristics of each specific variant, allowing pilots to experience the operational differences in a controlled environment. Simulator sessions emphasize hands-on practice with new systems, revised checklists, and any modified emergency procedures specific to the variant.

Program Structure and Duration

Differences training typically spans 3-10 days depending on the extent of modifications between variants. The program concludes with a proficiency check conducted in the full flight simulator, validating the pilot's competency on the new variant. This efficient approach allows pilots to maintain their type rating while expanding their operational capabilities across multiple aircraft configurations, supporting fleet flexibility and career advancement opportunities within their organization.
