Frequently Asked Questions

A Full Flight Simulator is a highly realistic replica of a specific aircraft cockpit, mounted on a motion platform with a visual display system. FFS are used for pilot training, type ratings, and proficiency checks. The highest qualification, Level D, provides such fidelity that pilots can earn type ratings without ever flying the actual aircraft — known as Zero Flight Time (ZFT) training.
Full flight simulators are qualified into four levels (A through D) by the FAA under 14 CFR Part 60 and by EASA under CS-FSTD(A). Level A is the minimum with 3 degrees of freedom motion, while Level D is the highest with full 6-DOF motion, 150°+ visual field of view, and realistic physical effects like runway rumble and stall buffet. Level D simulators enable zero flight time type ratings.
Type rating costs vary widely depending on the aircraft and training provider. Commercial aircraft type ratings (e.g., Boeing 737, Airbus A320) typically range from $8,000 to $25,000. Business jet type ratings can range from $15,000 to $40,000+. Costs usually include simulator time, ground school, and examination fees, but accommodation and travel are typically extra.
Full flight simulators are used for initial type ratings, recurrent training, pilot proficiency checks (PPC), operator proficiency checks (OPC), line-oriented flight training (LOFT), upset prevention and recovery training (UPRT), multi-crew cooperation (MCC), CAT II/III approach training, ATP certification, and instructor/examiner qualification courses.
